EMT-B Program

Re:  Changes in Title 22 affecting EMT-B certifications as of July 1, 2005

The newest changes in Title 22 have changed the way in which EMT-B students gain their initial certifications.  Prospective students must pass a basic certification class at which point they will be given a certificate of completion (please note, this certificate does not grant the holder an EMT card or the ability to work as an EMT).  The student must then take their certificate of completion and go to an accredited National Registry testing site.  Once the test is done and the student passes they then become a nationally registered EMT-B.  This national registry certificate allows them to become certified in California.

Title 22 also changes the way we do re-certifications of EMT-B certificates.  Those changes are listed below:

If your EMT-1 Certificate has expired you will need to do one of the following based on the length of time your card has been expired.

•   Card expired 6 months or less:

    ◦       Submit 24 hours of continuing education, and

    ◦       Skills verification examination

•   Card expired over 6 months but less than 1 year:

    ◦       Submit a total of 36 hours of continuing education, and

    ◦       Skills verification examination

•   Card expired over 1 year and less than 2 years:

    ◦       Submit 48 hrs of continuing education, and

    ◦       Skills verification examination, and

    ◦             Documentation of successful completion of the National Registry EMT-B examination

•   Card expired over 2 years

◦       The EMT-1 course must be repeated and certification will be treated as initial certification
